One Fathom Bank Lighthouse, a 43-meter cylindrical steel tower, stands with its red and white horizontal bands in the waters of the Malacca Strait. Its construction in 1999 replaced earlier structures on this site that had guided mariners since 1852. The tower's design includes a lantern and triple gallery, rising from a dome-shaped equipment shelter atop a circular platform supported by pilings. This lighthouse emits a single white flash every 20 seconds, visible for 17.6 nautical miles. The site is open to the public, though the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse warns ships of the submerged One Fathom Bank, a hazard within the busy Malacca Strait. It also guides vessels approaching Port Klang, a major Southeast Asian port.
