About Moçambique Capitania do Porto Lighthouse
Also known as: Moçambique Capitania do Porto (?)
The Moçambique Capitania do Porto lighthouse is a 15-meter cylindrical masonry tower painted white, with a focal height of 15.5 meters. It emits a single white flash every 3.4 seconds, providing a geographic range of 12 nautical miles. The lighthouse is located on the waterfront of the Ilha de Moçambique, near the port of Mocambique. In 2015, its NGA description changed, indicating a relocation of the light source. It is now thought to be housed in a white hut on piles, though its exact current location remains uncertain. The site is open to the public, but the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse guides maritime traffic to the historic Ilha de Moçambique, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its history reflects the dynamic nature of navigational aids, with apparent changes to its structure and location over time.
