About Kvernanes Lighthouse
Also known as: Kvernanes (Tau)
Located off a headland on the north side of the harbor entrance to Tau, Norway, Kvernanes lighthouse features a skeletal white tower with a red roof, standing 6 meters tall. A lantern is mounted on tripod piles, with the focal height of the light at 5 meters. Its geographic range extends to 8.4 nautical miles. The light emits an occulting white, red, or green signal with a 6-second cycle. The site is open to the public, but the tower itself is closed. The nearest port, Tau, is just 0.1 kilometers away.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for the safe navigation of ferries and other vessels entering and departing Tau harbor, a critical transportation link to Stavanger. Its directional light, which changes color based on approach, guides mariners around the headland and into the busy terminal.
