About Kashima City Lighthouses Lighthouse
This cylindrical concrete lighthouse was built in 1971 and first lit the same year. It stands 32 meters tall with the light situated 63 meters above sea level. The tower is white and features a lantern and gallery, attached to a single-story equipment shelter. Located in the Oritsu neighborhood on high ground, it is about 1 kilometer from the coast and approximately 5 kilometers north of Kashima harbor. The light emits a white flash every 5 seconds, visible for 20.5 nautical miles. The site is open to the public, though the tower itself remains closed. The lighthouse underwent restoration in 2020.
Why it matters: This lighthouse guides vessels approaching Kashima harbor and marks the coastline north of the port, helping to prevent groundings.
