About Isla Hormigas de Afuera Lighthouse
This concrete and fiberglass cylindrical tower was built in 1973 on a small island 65 km west of Callao, Peru. Standing 15 meters tall with a focal height of 32 meters, its upper half is black and the lower half is white, atop an unpainted concrete base. The lighthouse emits a white flash every 10 seconds. Substantially altered in 1994, it has a geographic range of 15.7 nautical miles. The island, named 'Outer Ants' for rocks visible on the horizon, is only reachable by boat.
Why it matters: The lighthouse warns vessels of the isolated Outer Ants rocks, a significant hazard in the open sea west of Callao, and serves as a critical navigational reference for ships in the Pacific shipping lanes.
