Hospital Point Range Front Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Hospital Point Range Front Lighthouse
This white, square pyramidal light tower stands 14 meters tall and was first lit in 1871. It has a focal height of 21 meters. The lighthouse was automated in 1947 and later received a new acrylic optic in 1981, though the original 3.5-order Fresnel lens has since been returned. Two bronze plaques are affixed to the tower, one detailing the lighthouse and a former smallpox hospital on the site, and the other commemorating Revolutionary War soldiers stationed there.
Why it matters: The lighthouse forms the front of a range guiding vessels toward Salem Harbor and marks the deep water channel to Beverly, Salem, and Marblehead. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
