About Hamelin Island Lighthouse
A 9-meter tall, cylindrical concrete tower, this lighthouse commenced operation in 1904, with its light emitting two white flashes every 10 seconds. Situated at the northern extremity of Cape Naturaliste, bordering Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park in Western Australia, the structure celebrated its centenary in April 2004. A renovation concluding in 2017 introduced a new viewing deck. The location is accessible to the public and includes former residences for keepers, one of which now serves as a museum.
Why it matters: This navigation aid assists ships on the shipping routes along the southwest coast of Western Australia, aiding them in avoiding the landmass and securely navigating around the cape.
