About Genkai Shima Lighthouse
Constructed of concrete in 1934, the Genkai Shima Lighthouse stands 12 meters tall as a white cylindrical tower. It rises from a semicircular, single-story equipment building on the island's northeastern side. The light, visible for 22.5 nautical miles, emits a white flash every 15 seconds. With a focal height of 79 meters, the lighthouse is situated on Genkai Shima, an island positioned at the entrance to Fukuoka Bay, approximately 3.5 km northeast of Nishima Misaki. The site is open to the public, though the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for guiding vessels entering and leaving Fukuoka Bay, a key port for regional commerce and fishing.
