Built in 1920, the Galiton de l'Ouest lighthouse stands on the highest point of a western island in the Galite Islands archipelago, approximately 30 km northwest of Cap Serrat. This cylindrical tower, painted black, measures 14 meters high and is topped by a lantern and gallery. It rises from a two-story keeper's house. The lighthouse's light has a focal height of 168 meters and emits a white flash every 20 seconds, visible for over 31 nautical miles. Construction of the lighthouse faced repeated delays due to high costs and engineering challenges.
Why it matters: The lighthouse warns vessels of the precipitous Galite Islands, a significant navigational hazard in this area.
