White River Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About White River Lighthouse
Built in 1875, the White River Light is an octagonal limestone tower standing 11.5 meters tall, attached to a keeper's dwelling constructed from the same material. The lightstation complex originally included a pier-head beacon, oil house, woodshed, and privy. It is situated on a narrow peninsula that separates Lake Michigan from White Lake. The lighthouse guided mariners to the river entrance until it ceased operations in 1960. It is one of four lighthouses managed by the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association.
Why it matters: The lighthouse served as a guide to the river until its decommissioning in 1960.
