Sand Island Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Sand Island Lighthouse
The Sand Island Light stands 13 meters tall, with its focal plane at 18 meters. This white, octagonal tower, constructed from locally quarried brown sandstone, incorporates a two-story dwelling. The lighthouse features a white light with a simple flash characteristic. Originally intended to guide mariners on Lake Superior, its geographic range was noted at 7 nautical miles. The structure shows quarry marks on the rock ledges nearby, remnants of its construction. It was designed in a Gothic Revival style common to several other lighthouses in the region. The light is no longer operational.
Why it matters: The Sand Island Light is a contributing property to the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
