Port Isabel Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Port Isabel Lighthouse
The Port Isabel Lighthouse, constructed in 1852, stands as a 17-meter brick tower. It was first lit in the same year to aid navigation through the Brazos Santiago Pass. Initially equipped with multiple lamps and reflectors, it later featured a third-order Fresnel lens installed in 1857, which produced a varied flashing pattern. The lighthouse's operational status has since ceased. Its strategic location offered a vantage point during historical conflicts.
Why it matters: This lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 30, 1976. During the American Civil War, soldiers from both Union and Confederate forces utilized the tower as an observation post.
