Location & Light Range
About Ocracoke Lighthouse
This white tower stands 23 meters tall with a focal height of 23 meters. It was first lit in 1798, though some sources indicate a later construction date of 1823 for this iteration. The lighthouse emits a fixed white light visible for 15 nautical miles. Its diameter tapers from 7.6 meters at the base to 3.7 meters at its peak. A steel spiral staircase provides access for maintenance, though public access to the top is restricted. The light station was automated in 1955.
Why it matters: Ocracoke Light guides vessels through Ocracoke Inlet into Pamlico Sound and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
