About Gulfport Upper Reach Inbound Range Rear Lighthouse
This 23-meter pyramidal skeletal tower, built in 2006, stands on the south side of Beach Boulevard near 27th Avenue, marking the entrance to Gulfport's dock area. It emits an occulting red light, with four-second cycles, providing a geographic range of 14.3 nautical miles. The current structure replaced a previous aid destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, which had significantly impacted the region's infrastructure. The light's focal plane is 25 meters above sea level. This navigational aid is part of a range system designed for the Upper Reach dredged channel in Mississippi Sound.
Why it matters: This range light is indispensable for the safe navigation of large containerships entering Gulfport's busy commercial port, providing precise guidance through the Upper Reach channel.
