About Grand Harbour Lighthouse
The Grand Harbour Lighthouse stood on Ross Island, marking the entrance to Grand Harbour on Grand Manan Island. Constructed in 1879 for $1,050, it featured a square wooden tower attached to a keeper's dwelling. Initially equipped with a catoptric lens, it emitted a fixed white light visible for up to 11 nautical miles. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1963 when a breakwater light was established at Ingalls Head. It suffered damage in the 1976 Groundhog Day gale and was ultimately destroyed by a gale in November 2013.
Why it matters: In 1999, Lighthouse Digest declared this lighthouse "North America's most endangered lighthouse".
