About Gimli Lighthouse
Also known as: Gimli (replica)
A 7-meter square wood replica tower now stands at the foot of Centre Street on the southwestern shore of Lake Winnipeg. This structure incorporates the salvaged lantern from the original lighthouse, which was demolished by ice in 1943. The original structure had been built in 1910. The replica is attached to the Lake Winnipeg Visitor Centre. The New Iceland Heritage Museum owns the lighthouse, and the visitor centre manages it daily. The community of Gimli, located in the Rural Municipality of Gimli, was originally settled by Icelandic immigrants.
Why it matters: The original lighthouse provided navigation assistance on Lake Winnipeg. Today, the replica serves as a cultural and tourism attraction, connecting visitors to the area's heritage and the lake's historical maritime activity.
