Galloo Island Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Galloo Island Lighthouse
Constructed in 1820, Galloo Island Light is situated on the southwestern edge of the island. The structure stands 17.5 meters tall, emitting a fixed white light visible for up to 15 miles. In foggy conditions, a steam whistle sounds, blowing for 10 seconds followed by 30 seconds of silence. The lighthouse and most of the island are privately owned, though the Coast Guard has access for navigational purposes. Landings at Galloo Island must be made by smaller boats due to the lack of a harbor.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and guides vessels through the waters off Jefferson County.
