About Amédée Lighthouse
This white, quadrilateral iron tower stands 56 meters tall and was first lit in 1865. Its metal components were fabricated in Paris in 1862 and the structure was assembled there as a demonstration before being transported to New Caledonia. The tower's 247 steps lead to a focal height of 52 meters. It emits two white flashes every 10 seconds, visible for 20 nautical miles. The lighthouse's foundation stone was laid on January 18, 1865.
Why it matters: The Amédée Lighthouse marks the entrance to the Boulari Passage, a significant natural opening in the reef system surrounding New Caledonia.
